AI Clinical Assistant

The EMR Ghana AI Clinical Assistant is a powerful decision-support tool designed to assist healthcare providers in delivering accurate diagnoses and safe prescriptions. By analyzing structured clinical data, the AI provides real-time insights that complement a clinician's expertise.

Overview

The AI Assistant is integrated directly into the consultation workflow. It acts as a second set of eyes, identifying potential patterns in symptoms or risks in medication that might require further clinical investigation.

Differential Diagnosis

The Differential Diagnosis tool analyzes a patient's presenting symptoms and medical history to suggest potential conditions for consideration.

How to use:

  1. Document Symptoms: Ensure all presenting symptoms, vitals, and history of present illness are documented in the Consultation section.
  2. Trigger Analysis: Click the "Analyze Symptoms" button within the consultation interface.
  3. Review Suggestions: The AI will return a list of prioritized differential diagnoses based on the provided data.
  4. Clinical Correlation: Review each suggestion against the physical examination and laboratory findings to finalize the diagnosis.

[!NOTE] The AI Clinical Assistant is a supportive tool and does not replace medical judgment. All diagnoses must be confirmed by a licensed medical professional.

Drug Safety Analysis

The Drug Safety Analysis tool provides an automated check of a patient's prescription against their known allergies, current medications, and medical history.

How to use:

  1. Update Vitals & Allergies: Ensure the patient's weight, age, and known drug allergies are up to date.
  2. Enter Prescription: Add the intended medications to the prescription list.
  3. Run Safety Check: Click "Analyze Prescription" before finalizing the order.
  4. Evaluate Alerts:
    • Drug-Drug Interactions: Checks if any newly prescribed drugs interact negatively with existing medications.
    • Drug-Allergy Alerts: Cross-references the prescription with the patient's recorded allergies.
    • Dosage Verification: Checks if the dose is within safe ranges based on the patient's age and weight.

Best Practices

To ensure the highest accuracy and safety when using the AI Clinical Assistant:

  • Quality In, Quality Out: Provide clear, standard medical terminology and complete symptom descriptions.
  • Maintain Patient Records: Keep the patient's allergy profile and chronic condition list current in their Hospital Number file.
  • Protocol Adherence: Always verify AI suggestions against the Ghana Standard Treatment Guidelines (STG) and Hospital Protocols.
  • Critical Oversight: Do not rely solely on the AI assistant for critical clinical decisions or life-threatening emergencies.
